Wipro, one of India’s leading IT service providers, is making a significant shift in its approach to remote work, following in the footsteps of industry giants like TCS and Infosys. The era of working primarily from home, which became the new normal due to the Covid-19 pandemic, is slowly evolving. In a bid to strike a balance between remote and in-office work, Wipro has set forth new guidelines for its employees.

Starting November 15, Wipro is calling its global workforce back to the office, mandating that employees spend a minimum of three days a week at their designated office locations. This move aligns with a broader trend in the IT industry, as companies begin to recalibrate their remote work policies. While TCS has gone a step further by requiring its staff to be present at the office all five days of the workweek, Infosys has introduced a policy where some employees are expected to work in the office for a minimum of 10 days each month. HCL Tech has also joined the chorus, enforcing a similar three-day-a-week office attendance requirement.

This shift in strategy hints at the gradual dismantling of the hybrid work model, at least for a portion of the workforce, within technology firms. N.R. Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, recently stirred up controversy by advocating for young Indians to commit to working 70 hours a week for the betterment of the nation.

The change in policy at Wipro was communicated to employees through an email from the company’s President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Saurabh Govil, on November 6. The email not only mandated a minimum of three days of in-office work but also cautioned that failure to comply could result in unspecified consequences. Although the email did not elaborate on the punitive actions, Wipro’s spokesperson declined to provide further details when questioned.

The communication also emphasized Wipro’s commitment to adapting to the regulations and agreements of each country where it operates. It acknowledged that in some European nations, consultations with employee groups may be necessary to navigate these changes effectively.

Wipro has been gradually encouraging employees to return to the office since May, initially recommending a three-day-a-week in-office work arrangement. Presently, approximately 55 percent of Wipro’s workforce is already operating from the office.

In the case of TCS, the shift back to the office began in October, with employees being required to work from the office for the entire workweek. This marked a shift from their previous hybrid model, where employees spent three days in the office.

As for Wipro’s financial performance, for the quarter ending on September 30, 2023, the company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 2,667.3 crore. This was a slight increase from the Rs 2,649 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

In summary, Wipro’s decision to bring employees back to the office for at least three days a week is a significant move that aligns with the changing landscape of remote work in the IT industry. This decision, along with similar moves by other industry players, underscores the ongoing transformation of work policies, reflecting a balance between remote and in-office work.
