Wireless earbuds have become quite common, offering a plethora of choices, including some surprisingly affordable options. For individuals entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, AirPods are often the obvious choice, and for good reasons.

However, if you’re part of the Android ecosystem, value high-quality audio, and are willing to invest in superior audio solutions, you might want to consider Sony’s latest flagship offering: the WF-1000XM5 noise-canceling earbuds. While these earbuds are compatible with iOS devices, they are designed with certain priorities in mind.

Having used the predecessor, the WF-1000XM4, for an extended period, I can attest to their enduring relevance. However, there is always room for improvement, and Sony has addressed most of the concerns users had with the previous model in this completely redesigned WF-1000XM5.

The XM5 retains all the features that made the XM4 great while addressing any issues. It boasts class-leading sound quality and noise-canceling capabilities, along with exceptional battery life, all packaged in a compact and attractive design.

One of the noticeable differences is that the XM5 earbuds are smaller and 20 percent lighter than the XM4, making them a better fit for a wider range of users. The charging case is also more compact and offers wireless charging. The XM4’s bulkiness had deterred some users, but the smaller XM5s address this concern. They provide a snug and lightweight fit and are partially constructed from recycled materials. The glossy finish of the earbuds is complemented by a matte finish on the touch control area, preventing fingerprint smudges. Additionally, the earbuds sit more discreetly in the ears compared to their predecessors.

It’s worth noting that the included ear tips now come with extra small options, ensuring a better fit for various ear sizes. These ear tips create a tight seal, essential for optimal sound quality and noise-canceling performance. Furthermore, the earbuds are IPX4 splash-proof and sweat-resistant.

Sony’s flagship headphones and earbuds have always been feature-rich, and the XM5 introduces new enhancements alongside existing favorites. Features like “speak-to-chat” automatically pause music and activate ambient mode when you start speaking, similar to Apple’s Transparency mode. Multipoint Bluetooth pairing allows simultaneous connection to two devices, and there are numerous EQ settings and adaptive sound modes, along with support for hands-free Alexa.

A new beta setting called “Find Your Equalizer” lets you choose from various EQ tweaks to find your preferred sound profile. The ear detection sensors pause music when you remove an earbud, and you can use a single earbud if desired. Notably, the XM5 supports spatial sound with head tracking, similar to Apple’s Spatial Audio.

In terms of performance, the XM5 is a step up from the XM4, featuring new speaker driver units and three microphones in each earbud. Powered by two proprietary Sony chipsets, including the HD noise-canceling processor QN2e, the XM5 offers exceptional noise cancellation. Testing against the previous model reveals a substantial improvement, effectively muffling a broader range of frequencies. The XM5 delivers cleaner sound with improved bass definition and a slightly warmer tonal balance compared to rival devices. Overall, the audio quality for music and movies is excellent, in line with Sony’s XM series of full-size headphones.

When it comes to voice calls, the earbuds use bone conduction sensors to isolate your speech from ambient sounds and background noise, ensuring clear calls even in noisy environments. The call quality and noise reduction are impressive, rivaling that of the AirPods Pro 2. Wind noise is effectively minimized with these earbuds.

Battery life is similar to the XM4, offering around eight hours on a single charge with noise canceling at moderate volume levels and up to 12 hours with it off. The case provides two additional charges, slightly better than the AirPods Pro 2.

In summary, the Sony WF-1000XM5 is an impressive pair of earbuds offering outstanding performance. If you use them with an Android device, you may find it difficult to switch to any other wireless earbuds. While there are some competing models from Bose and Sennheiser, the AirPods Pro 2 remains a strong choice for iOS users.

The WF-1000XM5 is ideal for frequent travelers, individuals who make numerous phone calls, especially for business, and those seeking top-notch sound quality. It’s a premium device with future-proofing features, a rarity in today’s market.”
