If you’re considering a laptop for your 2023 blogging needs and want to avoid copyright issues, you might be wondering, are Chromebooks a worthwhile choice? Chromebooks are straightforward laptops that run on the ChromeOS operating system, and their suitability depends on what Google offers.

Various brands offer Chromebooks, so your decision often boils down to a few additional features. However, the choice can be somewhat complex, as I discovered while reviewing the ASUS Chromebook CX1400.

One of the primary attractions of a Chromebook is its affordability, but that’s not the only aspect to consider. A low-cost Chromebook may not be suitable if your daily tasks require a Windows laptop. On the other hand, your daily tasks may align perfectly with a Chromebook’s capabilities.

I created a checklist of tasks I needed to accomplish with my laptop, and top priority was given to maintaining my focus while writing. Chromebooks offer access to most applications available on the Google Play store, and you can easily use Google Docs for productivity. For a few days, I decided to put my phone away during my writing sessions, as the main distraction was incoming WhatsApp messages. Even though responding to a message takes only about 20 seconds, I often found myself wasting an additional 10 minutes scrolling through my phone.

With a Chromebook, I was able to complete all my tasks with a clear intention, especially when it came to writing. I still had the option to watch videos, but I was less likely to spend hours indulging in my favorite streaming shows on a 14-inch full-HD display. For a distraction-free work environment, you can even disconnect from the internet and solely focus on your writing.

Despite occasional reports about the Chromebook losing its appeal, I believe it remains relevant. Consider a scenario where you opt for a budget Windows laptop. The problem with such machines is that they often start experiencing issues, like throttling, within a few months. If you’re on a tight budget and need a laptop for school-related tasks and video calls for your children, the CX1400 outperforms most budget Windows laptops. Many schools use Google Classroom and Google apps, making the Chromebook a suitable choice. Additionally, the built-in 720p HD camera is adequate for video calls.

Some users primarily use a laptop for web browsing, research, paying bills, watching short videos, and taking notes, with most of their work done on a phone. For these users, the CX1400 performs well. The Intel Celeron N4500 processor ensures smooth performance for most everyday tasks, though it may not handle heavy photo-editing applications. The built-in stereo speakers provide decent sound, making it suitable for watching instructional videos before heading to the kitchen.

Before making a decision, there are a few factors to keep in mind. The storage is limited to 128GB eMMC, so you’ll need to rely on cloud storage. If you’re comfortable with cloud storage, this laptop is a good fit. Most Chromebooks are lightweight, but not necessarily ultra-slim. With a weight of around 1.5 kg (depending on the model), it’s easy to carry in a backpack. It also offers approximately 10 hours of battery life. Some models in this series have a 360-degree hinge that allows you to use the laptop in tent mode, which can be useful when watching videos with family.

However, the touchscreen quality is quite good, and the port selection includes two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, a 3.5mm combo audio jack, and a microSD card reader.

On the downside, Chromebooks offer a more limited selection of apps compared to Windows laptops, so your choice depends on your specific needs. If simplicity and ease of use are your top priorities, the ASUS Chromebook CX1400 is a reliable option that won’t disappoint.
